Winter Adventures

If you looking to do more than just ski during winter, Canada can provide you with some fantastic, thrill seeking once in a lifetime adventures.

For a different form of transport take a journey via dogsled. This truly is a Canadian activity. Feel your heart race as you dogsled through some of the most pristine landscape. Smell, feel and touch the surroundings as you make your way through National Parks and breathtaking scenery. This is a unique experience and one that will leave you with memories for a lifetime. Dogsledding trips can be organized in most regions of Canada and can last a couple of days or longer. The season is from December to April.

Caving and Canyoning is a great way to see areas that not many people experience. Even during winter there are tours available exploring unique cave formations, glaciers, underground caves and ice walks. Canmore near Banff has some great areas to explore.

Rideau Canal connects the city of Ottawa to the city of Kingston. In winter a section of the canal in central Ottawa becomes the world’s longest ice skating rink. During Winterlude, which takes place in February, this rink comes alive with activities for everyone.

Couples, friends, toddlers and even commuters who wish to skate to work, glide their way down the canal which depending on how well it has frozen can be over 7km long. Activities during Winterlude include Portraits on ice – a display of artwork under the Bank Street bridge, learn to skate and the annual Bedzzz Race where competitors push (or skate), a bed down the canal and raise money for charity.

Fishing anyone? Ice fishing offers the keen angler an experience of a lifetime. Take a trip on any one of Canada’s lakes to enjoy this true winter adventure. Most anglers will have a heated hut to keep warm in whilst waiting for the big one to bite. The most popular fish to catch are walleye, pike and trout although there are other freshwater game fish to catch.

Journey to Big White

All our drivers have been really friendly and chatty but I was quietly relieved when this driver discretely turned off the bus lights 10 minutes after the journey began to let us continue sleeping.

Skiing Big White

I woke early to the sound of the snow plows heading up the mountain - what a perfect alarm clock at a ski resort. After a hearty breakfast and purchasing a bright pink crash helmet we headed up the mountain for a full day skiing. We paid for ski lessons in the morning and then used the expertise of the mountain hosts in the afternoon. All these guys (and girls) are awesome and so knowledgeable.

Skiing Silver Star

We skied the whole day today at Silver Star in British Columbia, Canada and we had perfect blue skies, no wind and only one or two people on any run we went on - unmatched skiing conditions. This day has officially gone down as my skiing day highlight. WOW.
